A new environmental initiative for the Brussels Canal

Having your sandwich on the quai des Péniches or near Sainctelette? Take a look at the water. For the past few weeks, discreet floating litter traps have begun to filter out large waste items that would otherwise end up in the North Sea.

The initiative comes from the Port de Bruxelles, in partnership with the NGO City to Ocean. It was first reported by Bruxelles Today on 9 July 2026.

How does the 'Adopt a Litter Trap' sponsorship work?

A litter trap is a small, angled floating barrier that uses the canal’s current to funnel floating waste — bottles, bags, packaging — towards a collection point. It’s nothing spectacular: just simple, robust, and above all, 100% passive engineering.

The principle is based on sponsorship:

• An individual, a non-profit, a local business or a company adopts a litter trap.
• The sponsor funds its installation and one year of maintenance.
• Each litter trap is given a name (the sponsor’s name, or a chosen one).
• The volumes of waste intercepted are measured and published.

The power of a measurable and accessible project

Three things make this a quintessentially Brussels initiative.

1. The canal is our link to the ocean. A bottle thrown into the water at Molenbeek can end up in the English Channel within weeks. Brussels may not have a coastline, but it has a maritime responsibility.

2. It’s measurable. Unlike traditional awareness campaigns, each litter trap provides public data. We will know, kilogram by kilogram, what Brussels has prevented from being sent out to sea.

3. It’s open to everyone. The entry cost is designed to be affordable for a small local shop as well as a multinational corporation. There are no technical barriers — just the desire to do something tangible.

What is the expected impact on waterway pollution?

The programme is starting with a roll-out along the canal in the Brussels area. The goal by 2027 is to cover the critical points identified by the Port authority. The first results will be published quarterly.

How to adopt a litter trap with the Port de Bruxelles

The sponsorship form is available via the Port de Bruxelles. The team provides support for individuals, schools, neighbourhood committees, and companies. A primary school can adopt one for the academic year and make it part of an educational project. A canal-side restaurant can give its name to one.

At a time when environmentalism can sometimes feel overwhelmingly complex, this initiative offers the opposite: a simple gesture, a quantifiable impact, and a litter trap bearing your name.
