Brussels is a city of generous hearts and unconditional devotion. And sometimes, these hearts are finally brought into the spotlight, revealing the beauty of their commitment. Such is the case for Walter Derieuw, the spokesperson for our courageous Brussels firefighters, who has been honoured with the title of 'Spokesperson of the Year' at the tenth edition of the Nuit des porte-paroles, as reported by BX1.
At 68, Walter is not just the oldest winner in the award’s history; he is, above all, an embodiment of life and passion. Before joining the fire brigade eleven years ago at the age of 57, he first dedicated his life to others as a team leader in an emergency room. A late career change, but one that speaks to a deep desire to serve and protect. His journey is a source of inspiration, proving that there is no age limit to finding your calling or excelling at what you love.
What makes Walter so exceptional is his unwavering dedication. Acclaimed by nearly 160 of his peers and by a professional jury, he is praised for his exemplary availability. Imagine the energy and passion required to manage a WhatsApp group of 300 journalists daily, from 6:45 AM to 10:30 PM! The 241 press releases he issued last year are bridges built between the silent, often intense world of emergency response and a public hungry for information. He is the reassuring voice that informs and calms, right at the heart of events.
This recognition is not just for one man; it is also a tribute to all the capital’s emergency services. It underscores the vital importance of the link between these everyday heroes and the public. Walter Derieuw is proof of what resilience, passion, and humanity can achieve. His commitment is a flame that illuminates the solidarity of Brussels and reminds us how rich our city is in its dedicated 'faces'.
