What is happening on Avenue des Croix du Feu?
The north of Brussels is preparing to unveil a new look in the summer of 2026: the Avenue des Croix du Feu, which connects Laeken to Neder-Over-Heembeek, is becoming a genuine green urban boulevard stretching over 2,510 metres. The project is led by Bruxelles Mobilité in collaboration with the City of Brussels.
Improving pedestrian safety with new cycle paths
The stated ambition of the Brussels-Capital Region is clear: to make the public space more pleasant and safer for the residents of both districts. On the programme:
- secure cycle paths along its entire length,
- widened pavements and better-marked pedestrian crossings,
- a complete redevelopment of the roadway to calm traffic,
- and new planting and tree lines that will transform the route into a green corridor.
Reconnecting Laeken and NOH with an urban green corridor
Until now, the Avenue des Croix du Feu has been merely a transit route. It will now be transformed into a living space that reconnects the urban fabric between Laeken and Neder-Over-Heembeek. For the families, schools, local shops, and associations in the north of the capital, this is a veritable breath of fresh air for the city — bringing cooler summers, less noise, and greater biodiversity.
When will the new Laeken green boulevard be finished?
This project illustrates a fundamental trend: the Brussels-Capital Region continues, kilometre by kilometre, to repurpose its major arteries for pedestrians, cyclists, and urban nature. This approach is consistent with other traffic-calming projects underway, and sends a positive signal to all residents of the capital’s north-west, who are often less well-served by major redevelopments than the city centre.
The inauguration is expected in the summer of 2026. Be sure to visit and enjoy this new lease of life.
