In the heart of Brussels, Big Mama is much more than a Belgian restaurant. It is Thierry and Christine’s house, run by a duo who are always present: he works in the kitchen and serves guests, while she welcomes diners and looks after the bar. Together, for more than twenty years, they have cultivated generous hospitality built on local dishes, humour and attention.

Some restaurants are chosen for their menu. Others are remembered for the people who bring them to life. Big Mama belongs to both categories.

Two owners, four jobs and the same energy

Located on Place de la Vieille Halle aux Blés in the historic centre, this thoroughly Belgian address has welcomed fans of shrimp croquettes, Brussels beef carbonnade, Liège meatballs and mussels with fries since 2001. Behind the plates is a couple who have made presence and conviviality their signature.

Thierry works at the stove, where sauces simmer and the house classics are prepared. He also steps into the dining room to serve, exchange a few words and make sure every plate delivers on its promise.

Christine sets the restaurant’s rhythm. She welcomes, advises, serves and looks after the bar. She knows the menu, the beers and the subtle art of timing: when to guide, when to joke and when to let a table quietly enjoy its meal.

A Belgian house that keeps it real

At Big Mama, you do not come to nibble three carefully spaced elements on an oversized plate. You come to eat.

The menu celebrates generous, instantly recognisable Belgian cooking: grey shrimp croquettes, Brussels-style beef carbonnade with fresh fries, Liège meatballs, mussels, meatloaf with mustard sauce and stoemp, grandmother-style chicken vol-au-vent and beef americain minced to order.

This kitchen does not try to reinvent Belgium. It prefers to serve it with appetite. The sauces are made for mopping up, the fries for sharing — in theory — and the stews remind us that a good recipe needs no long speech when it arrives steaming at the table.

A menu that brings everyone together

The restaurant remains faithful to Belgian classics while offering vegetarian choices. Abbey cheese croquettes, vegetarian balls in tomato sauce and linguine with tomato, basil and mozzarella allow everyone to enjoy the same table.

Then come the desserts: Brussels waffle with whipped cream, Belgian chocolate mousse, speculoos tiramisu, crème brûlée or chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. At this stage, the phrase “I’ll only taste one spoonful” should be considered entirely non-binding.

Big Mama’s real secret

Big Mama’s strength is not only its Belgian specialities, fresh fries or beer selection. It lies in the consistency of the place. Thierry cooks what Christine presents. Christine brings to life the room Thierry feeds. In a city centre where addresses can come and go without leaving a memory, Big Mama does the opposite: it cultivates a stable, embodied and immediately recognisable identity.

You can walk in for shrimp croquettes or the familiar taste of Brussels carbonnade. You leave feeling that you were welcomed, rather than simply served. At Big Mama, the best ingredients have two first names.
